How to take care of your costumes
It's very important to keep all your items fresh and clean.
If you take great care of your costumes, they will last you for a couple of years.
We like to share some tips and tricks to keep everything looking as new, as long as possible!
Washing your items
Rule number one:
DO NOT, we repeat: DO NOT PUT YOUR COSTUME IN THE WASHING MACHINE!
All of the glued on rhinestones will fall off and you will destroy all of the delicate things that may be attached to your costume.
If you must wash your costume, please fill up the sink with cold/lukewarm water.
Add a little bit of laundry detergent and carefully rub the parts that are dirty.
Let it soak in for a few minutes.
But watch out with bright fabric colors like red, because they can stain or discolor other parts of your costume that are not that same color.
After soaking you just put everything on a drying rack and you're done!
If you don't have the time to clean your costume or if it has a bad odor, you can also use textile freshener.
This is a spray that removes bad smells.
But since it's a chemical you also have to wash the spray out of your costume, so don't use it too much.
For headpieces and wirebras you can wipe the insides clean with a light wet make up towel or rubbing alcohol, do this after every performance.
A trick to keep your headpiece super clean is to use painter's tape and tape the insides.
After your performance you just only take the tape off.
Let everything air dry
Make sure to take your costumes immediately out of your bag/suitcase when you get home from performing.
Put everything on a drying rack and if you can, let it dry outside.
How to pack your bag/suitcase
When you carry your costume make sure to always have the feathers in a separate bag/box.
Feathers are fragile and if they come in contact with sharp items they can damage the feathers.
If you have pieces that contain mesh, always pack them separate from the rest so that they don't come in contact with sharp edges, etc.
It's best to keep the flat items, such as legpieces/armpieces/bottoms/bodysuit, on the bottom of your bag/suitcase.
And then stack it with the wirebra and on top the headpiece.
Use hard plastic zip up bags to carry your costumes or feathers in.
Storage at home
Store your headpieces/costumes on a place not directly in the sun.
Due to sun exposure your items can discolor after a while.
In extreme cases the heat of the sun can also make the glue on your items melt which can cause rhinestones to fall off or even damage feathers.
Put your headpiece on a mannequin head and hang your feathers upside down in your closet.
Hanging upside down maintains the bounciness of the feathers.
Or just put them on top of your closet so that they can lay down flat.
With clothing is best to lay them flat down as well so that they can maintain their stretch.
